While Subic Bay
is known
for its wrecks it also has a very good selection of reefs. The ones
most often
dived are those around Grande Island. The
west side of
the island has a nice section of reef that runs along side it. The
best
portion is the area called the Canyons. It has a number of sand fingers
with
health coral and marine life. At the north end it is shallow about 15
feet and
is also used as a snorkeling site between tides. As you move along the
reef
towards the south the water gets a little deeper and the bottom terrain
more
pronounced,
Located south of
Grande and Chiqueta islands as another site
that is best dived with the tide. The Canyons are deeper and the
currents make
for a slow drift dive. Since it is open to the South
China Sea conditions here are less protected.
As mentioned on the San Quentin wreck site page, there is a
nice reef near the wreck. As shallow at 5 meters the reef is home to a
number
of giant clams.
The Camayan
Beach resort
has a number
of reefs around it that make for a nice shallow dive.
Other frequent reef include those at “Lighthouse” reef and
Analou’s wall, as well as the aquarium dive site. |
